Don Bosco

It is not enough to love the young, they must know that they are loved.

St John Bosco (1815-1888) popularly known as Don Bosco, was a Roman Catholic priest born in a little village at Becchi in northern Italy. By hard work and persevering efforts, he decided to dedicate his entire life for the welfare of youth. In 1859 he founded the Salesian Congregation. His ideas were so far in advance of his times as to be revolutionary. His methods were novel as they were daring. He died on 31 January 1888. He followed what is widely known as “Preventive System of Education” based on reason, spirituality and kindness. “Work and Prayer” was Don Bosco’s motto. In a society that aims at progress and security, there could not be better means. Don Bosco was canonized in April 1934.

Our Province

Salesian Province of Bangalore

The Province of Bangalore dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus came into existence on 19th March, 1979. The Province comprises two states, Kerala and three-fourth of Karnataka. At present, there are 351 members who reach out to the poorest of the poor through more than 50 centres and institutions. We have tried to become messengers of hope and channels of God’s love to thousands of poor people through our Mission Centres, Parishes, Trade Schools, Child Rehabilitation Centres, Youth Centres, Social Work Centres and our Shelters for the Children on the Street. Our service is primarily directed to young people, especially the poorest and the abandoned. We offer the “Don Bosco Way” of education in 134 countries.
